INFORMATION ABOUT THE USE OF COOKIES
BASIC INFORMATION
The Electronic Communications Act transposes the updated Directive 2002/58/ES concerning the processing of personal data and the protection of privacy in the electronic communications sector into Slovenian legislation. Provisions of the new law came into force on 15 June 2013 and apply to all web pages that use cookies and similar technologies for their operation.
The Directive introduced an article about cookies and similar technologies that can be used to save or acquire information and are stored on the user’s terminal equipment (such as a computer or mobile device). Henceforth, the use of such technologies is only possible with the user’s agreement.
The use of cookies online is not new, however users are poorly informed about such technologies as well as tools used to manage them.
WHAT ARE COOKIES?
A cookie is a small text file that is transferred to a user’s computer during their visit to a web page and usually includes:
- the name of the server from which the cookie was sent;
- the lifespan of the cookie;
- its value – usually a randomly generated unique number.
The cookie itself does not contain or collect information. However, if it is read by the server with a browser, it can help the web page provide a more personalised experience to the user; for example, by remembering previous purchases or data about the user’s account. A cookie can be read and used only by the server that sent it.
On a trusted web page, cookies can enrich the user experience. Nonetheless, they can be used in manners that invade an individual’s privacy. Cookies can be saved for various periods of time, either for the duration of a browser session or for much longer.
