Recently, the Slovenian manufacturer of fingerprint scanners Navkom introduced the renewed and upgraded R7 scanning technology. As previous versions of the fingerprint scanner devices (R5 and R6) have been discontinued, only the most advanced R7 technology is available. Users may choose between manual control from the touchpad on the control unit or remote control with a smartphone application.
Article summary
- Navkom has discontinued the R5 and R6 fingerprint scanners, and is now offering only the most advanced R7 technology. The main advantage is that users can now choose between manual control from the touchpad on the control unit or remote control with a smartphone application.
- When a round door handle is fitted with a fingerprint scanner, its diameter is enlarged from 30 to 34 mm.
- In addition to the handle, the set includes the fingerprint scanner, a control unit, a cable passage, cables for the motorised door lock (red) and for the scanner (yellow), and a power supply.
- The cable for connecting the LED lights on the door handle and the power supply cable are not included in the set.
- The recommended installing height of the scanner depends on the length of the handle and the mounting height on the entrance door. NAvkom recommends mounting at a height of 1550 mm from the floor.
Changes to round door handles with fingerprint scanners
In order to fit the door handle with the new fingerprint scanner, a change had to be made to round door handles.
Until now, the fingerprint scanners have been installed in door handles with a diameter of 30 mm. As some installations no longer fit in 30 mm diameter door handles, Griffing has decided to simplify and optimise the production process by opting for round handles with a diameter of 34 mm if the handles are to be fitted with fingerprint scanners.
The dimensions of other handles with fitted fingerprint scanners remain unchanged.
The Navkom R7 fingerprint scanner can be fitted onto the Prime Line (except for Exodus, Arcus and CVU models as we do not fit these with a scanner) and Vision Line door handles, and is suitable for mounting on the front as well as on the back.
What is included in the Navkom R7 fingerprint scanner set?
In addition to the front door handle with the R7 fingerprint scanner, the set includes the following:
Control unit: there are two types available; a forend control unit mounted on the door frame, and a small control unit mounted on the door.
All control units have an integrated decorative LED door lighting connection. Find out more about the control units by clicking here (page 18). |
|
Cable passage: only included in the forend control unit set; the small control unit can also be used in combination with the cable passages of other manufacturers. | |
Door lock and fingerprint scanner cables: cables are supplied depending on the type of lock (GU, KFV, Maco, Winkhaus, Fuhr or Roto).
Find out more about the door lock cable options by clicking here (page 22). |

Example of installation in a front door
What information do you need to provide when ordering a door handle with a Navkom R7 fingerprint scanner?
- Door handle type: you can choose between Prime Line (except for Arcus, Exodus and CVU models) and Vision Line door handles.
- R7 fingerprint scanner module colour: silver stainless steel and black versions are available. For black door handles a black module is recommended.
- Mounting location: the forend control unit is mounted on the door frame, while the small control unit is mounted on the door. Another important consideration regarding the forend control unit is the material of the front door; the forend can be either square (recommended for aluminium and PVC doors) or round (recommended for wooden doors). The control unit mounting location also affects the length of the cables (if the control unit is mounted on the door or at the door lock motor, a 120-cm cable is needed; if the control unit is mounted at the cable passage on the door frame, a 350-mm cable is needed).
- Door lock type or motor type: connecting cables are supplied depending on the door lock type. You can choose between six types of door locks: GU, KFV, Maco, Winkhaus, Fuhr and Roto.
- Cable length: when ordering, please specify the length of the cable needed to connect the lock to the power supply. The standard set comes with a 350-cm cable; however, a cable of desired length can be supplied instead.
- Power supply cable: only the power supply is included in the set. If a power supply cable is needed, it must be ordered separately.
Recommended installing height of the fingerprint scanner in the front door handle
Navkom recommends fitting the scanner at 1550 mm from the floor. This height has been proven to be accessible for children, people with disabilities and people of shorter stature.
At Griffing, we recommend fitting a scanner to different lengths of handles. Another important element is the height of the front door on which the handle will be mounted.
Example: if the distance between the floor and the bottom edge of the handle is 500 mm and the handle is 1800 mm long, the scanner should be fitted 1500 mm from the bottom edge of the handle, which means that it is installed 2000 mm from the floor! In this case, you should consider whether this is an appropriate height for the people who will be using the scanner. |
Benefits of the Navkom R7 fingerprint scanner for front door manufacturers
We recommend that manufacturers fit the scanner into the door handle, as the user touches it anyway when opening the door. Instead of a cut-out for the scanner in the door, an additional hole is made at the location of the handle mount for the cable transfer.
- Making doors smart: with the Navkom fingerprint scanner you offer a future-oriented solution. Your front doors will stand out and command greater value.
- Test phase: for the purpose of device testing during manufacturing. After each reset to factory settings, the device is in test phase for one minute. During this time, the door can be unlocked using any fingerprint/code without connection to the application. After the test phase, the device is reset to factory settings and ready for first use.
- Quick assistance: in case of problems, the Navkom team is available to assist you with quick solutions.
Advantages of the Navkom R7 technology for end customers
Unlocking with a fingerprint via the Navkom R7 scanner is simple and user-friendly.
- Unlimited access mode: you can use the application to set a specific period of time during which the door can be unlocked by any fingerprint (useful during a party or a home renovation, since you do not need to open the door with a saved fingerprint every time someone enters or leaves).
- Access schedule: a schedule is assigned to a specific person (at certain times on a certain day or several days of the week the door can be unlocked with this person’s fingerprint).
- LED door lighting control: in auto mode, the lights automatically switch on at sunset and off at sunrise, while in custom mode, the lights turn on and off in two daily intervals manually set by the user.
- Hybrid control: the fingerprint scanner can be used to control the device manually while the application is used only to unlock the front door and control the LED door lighting.
- Connecting other devices: in addition to the fingerprint scanner, several other devices (e.g. a keyboard and RF module) can be connected to the control unit at any time.
- Access without keys: you are able to unlock the door using only your finger – there is no need to carry keys.
Control the R7 fingerprint scanner manually from the touchpad or remotely with a smartphone application
Previously, customers had difficulty deciding which scanning technology to choose. If they changed their minds later, the technology was too expensive to replace. With the R7 technology, the user can operate the device manually from the touchpad on the control unit or remotely with a smartphone application and even switch between the two modes of operation at any time by resetting the device to factory settings.
- Manual control: the user presses the reset button or the button for adding an administrator fingerprint on the control unit and then continues to enter fingerprints.
- Maximum number of saved fingerprints: 3 x 166 (when entering or registering a fingerprint in the device, the finger must be placed on the sensor three times to ensure accurate scanning)
- Number of administrators: 3
- Turning the blue lights on and off
- Smartphone application: the user can download the X-manager application and start the programming process. As with manual control, several functions are available.
- Maximum number of saved fingerprints: 3 x 166 (when entering or registering a fingerprint in the device, the finger must be placed on the sensor three times to ensure accurate scanning)
- Number of administrators: unlimited
- Turning the blue lights on and off
- LED door lighting control
- Event history
- Managing relays
- Access schedules
- Unlimited access mode (specific period of time during which the door can be unlocked by any fingerprint)
- Fingerprint database export/import
- Remote unlocking using a smartphone
Hybrid control
Hybrid control allows the user to control the device manually and use the application only for:
- LED door lighting control
- Unlocking the door
Using the R7 fingerprint scanner is easy; we recommend mounting the fingerprint scanner on the front door handle, as the user inevitably touches it when opening the door. Due to the cutting-edge technology, R7 fingerprint scanners are also used for Griffing door handles.
